We’re continuing to work on a variety of topics as they appear to be of interest to Tornado Boy. This week’s obsession happened to be punctuation. He’s known about the basics – commas, periods, exclamation points and question marks for awhile. Now he is interested in all symbols and will frequently interrupt our reading time in order to point out or ask about punctuation. He wanted to know about the colon on the digital clock, the inch tick marks at the ice cream shop, quotation marks, apostrophes and anything else that he sees. I never thought much about how confusing our punctuation is: if it’s low – it’s a comma, if it’s high it’s an apostrophe, or maybe a single quote, or a foot notation, double it and it might be a quote, or inches. I take a lot of things for granted! I found myself singing an old Electric Company Song about punctuation, so I went ahead and found the clip on YouTube. Fun Stuff:

We also had some fun times talking about the plant life cycle and growing some grass. Tornado Boy can’t wait to “give it a haircut”. He wants to sit and watch it grow, and while it’s growing pretty quickly, that’s not terrible practical.

We also made a small monkey stick puppet and talked a bit about the rainforest habitat:

Monkey Stick Puppet

Tornado Boy is making some excellent forward progress on letters, drawing and using a pencil in general. We drew a cat and a barn this past week. We also started working with the Handwriting Without Tears package. That is going pretty well. I’ve laminated their capital letter guide and put it on the wall in front of his desk. This seems to give him much more confidence in forming his letters.

We’re buzzing along with math. Fractions still seem to fascinate Tornado Boy and he’ll often ask me to write then in their number form (ex. 1/2) on his handwriting toy. He also has fun asking me to split items (pancakes, cookies, etc) into specific numbers of equal parts. He’s curious about their connection to tenths since he sees that on my GPS I’ve told him that 4.4 miles means a bit more than 4 miles, and the .4 is similar to a fraction in that it means that it’s part of a whole. We also worked a lot with the abacus and Tornado Boy really enjoys working with it. He’s getting pretty good at being able to tell which numbers are even and which are odd and using the abacus to represent numbers up to 100. He’s getting the concept of the “tens” part of a number and the “ones” part of the number since the abacus does such a great job of helping him visualize the numbers.

It’ll be interesting to see what Tornado Boy picks for our lessons this week. He’s been really interested in dinosaurs this week. He’s been trying to memorize which are herbivores, omnivores and carnivores. He seems to have the meanings of who eats what a bit confused though. We’ll see if he’s still interested this week.
