Tiny Talk Tuesday – the TV Influence

While running full-tilt through our living room, Tornado Boy was yelling “I’m going accelerando (faster and faster)!” I know that he picked this up from the Little Einsteins cartoon. I’m really enjoying hearing him playing around with the words that they teach about music, and applying them to situations in life. The other day we were on our way into camp and a little boy was yelling. Tornado Boy commented that he needed to be speaking diminuendo (decreasing in loudness). It’ll be nice to see if he retains the words if/when we ever get around to having him take music lessons.

Tornado Boy, upon receipt of a grilled hot dog last week turned to me and said “Look Mom! This hot dog has birth marks!”

Tiny Talk Tuesday – Abbreviated

Tornado Boy and I were working on putting together a wooden United States puzzle this past weekend. When you take the colored state pieces out, the area below shows the outline of the state and the name of the capital city. TB would pick up a puzzle piece and I would give him information about the state such as “it’s on the west coast” or about its capital city. He’d have to use the clue and the outline to help him place the piece in the puzzle. We talked a lot about the pronunciation of some of the state and city names since several of them do not follow phonetic rules and they can be a bit tricky to pronounce. Towards the end of the puzzle, Tornado Boy picked up the state of Minnesota and I told him that the capital city was St. Paul. Tornado Boy found the outline and said “Mom, that’s not “Saint” Paul, it’s “Street” Paul.

Once again I had to laugh. The boy is so logical and St. is definitely street on all of the signs that he sees around town each day. I never really thought about how confusing abbreviations can be when they’re out of context.

Week In Review – June 25th

Here’s what we’ve been up to for the past week or so:

Science:
How does your garden grow? Quite well! We have fresh cherry tomatoes this week and our pepper is getting bigger. Tornado Boy loves to see if any tomatoes are ripe enough to pick each morning. We definitely are very limited with space in the Aerogarden, but I love that it’s inside and we really are involved with it each day. I know that the plants would be much bigger if they were outside, but I’m afraid that we would have forgotten to water them and they would have died in this awful heat.

Vocabulary:
We’ve been very pleased with the combination of Wordly Wise and Spelling City. We’ve completed four lessons in the past couple of weeks. One more lesson and we’ll be able to try out some of the games available on the Wordly Wise site, too. I’m already seeing leaps in Tornado Boy’s vocabulary as he tries out new words. We’ve done some side lessons as we’ve explore the new words. This is a great program for when you’re done with phonics lessons.

Spanish:
We’ve discovered Little Pim! I’ll create a full post with a product review in the coming weeks once we’ve had more time with him; but so far we really like it. It teaches in a manner that’s aimed at babies to preschoolers and is similar to how we learned sign language when TB was a baby. Tornado Boy is quickly picking up new words in Spanish. It’s definitely piqued his curiosity because a few days ago in the car he switched his Bob the Builder video to Spanish mode and was singing along with the theme song in Spanish. It’s fun to watch him play with a new language. It’s going to be like sign language all over again when I was working to keep up with him!

Playtime:
The costume box was very popular this week. We also got to try out some new costumes and props at the Children’s Museum.

Tiny Talk Tuesday – Where?

This morning we were working on a vocabulary lesson through Spelling City. One of our words was “enormous” and the default sentence for the word is “The redwood tree was enormous.” I was pretty sure that Tornado Boy had never seen a redwood tree, so I did a quick Google search and found the following video to show him:

We talked about how a redwood tree could grow to be taller than 10 large houses stacked on top of each other. I felt like at the end of the conversation, Tornado Boy had a good idea of the scale of the trees.

Later today, my father-in-law came home and asked if we’d “done school” yet today. I said yes, and he asked Tornado Boy what he had learned about. TB said that he learned about redwood trees. FIL then asked him where redwood trees were found. TB’s response: “YouTube!”
