Tornado Boy is a big fan of pencil puzzles. He’s been doing dot-to-dot puzzles and word searches for the better part of a year. He recently discovered puzzles that teach you how to break a secret code where each symbol in the puzzle stands for a letter. The one above was on our coaster at a lunch at Red Robin restaurant. His writing is a little hard to read because he was using a crayon and the space is pretty small. The answer is “Chili Chili Cheeseburger”.
I love secret code puzzles because they promote several things like handwriting practice and problem-solving. Tornado Boy loves them because they’re fun! We have a couple of pencil puzzle books that have secret code puzzles in them. You can also check out a few at Squigly’s Playhouse.

I don’t think we have a Red Robbin’s restaurant around here but that decoder looks pretty cool. What a great idea to keep kids busy while waiting for food. Parents are happy to because they are educational!
Maybe there is a hope for us eventually with pencil puzzles, but not quite yet. I am impressed with how TB could decode this riddle.

My 7year old would love that too. I wonder if I could make decoding games for her to ease the pain of the weekly spelling words. Thank you

I think we are a long way before we play something like this, but it certainly looks like fun!
