Just moments ago:
Tornado Boy: Mom, there’s a turkey on our deck.
Me: Ha, Ha!
Tornado Boy: No, mom there’s REALLY a turkey on our deck.
Sure enough, there was a huge wild turkey walking on the rails on our deck. Unfortunately he FLEW AWAY before I could get my camera turned on. I had no idea that wild turkeys could fly and he flew up pretty high into the trees behind us. I also didn’t know that TB could identify a live turkey, so kudos to him. You learn something new every day!

That’s funny. I would have a heart attack if I saw a wild turkey on my porch. Of course, I don’t live where wild turkeys live.

Terra – We’re fairly suburban here, but we have an unbuilt area around a small river behind our development. We do get some deer and other critters from time to time. The turkey was quite the shock.
Turkeys can fly? Why are so much conventional wisdom wrong? I’m more shocked that they can fly. It’s like the whole bananas having seeds that just turns the world upside down! Thank goodness for sharp, alert kids who pay attention to things…Sigh, now I need to find out what else I know is wrong.

Just looked it up…
Wild turkeys feed on the ground, which may have something to do with the myth that they can’t fly. The have to fly, however, because they roost in trees at night. Some accounts say they can soar up to 55 mph for short bursts.
Wow.

Min – I had to look it up, too! It shocked the heck out of me. I’d estimate that he was about 3 ft long from his beak to his tail feathers. He flew like a rocket up to the top of a tree that is probably about 40 feet tall. It blew me away.
I wrote my hubby to tell him what happened and he asked if I was sure that it was a turkey and not a crow or buzzard. I told him that it had the red wattle and was definitely a turkey. He said that it’s really rare for them to come that close to some place that’s inhabited and that TB may never see a wild turkey that close again. I’m so bummed that I wasn’t more careful walking over with my camera. I had no idea that he was going to fly away.
This is pretty neat to have a wild turkey visit like that. We are usually visited only by neighborhood cats
