We Play – Spell and Guess

We Play

This little game started by accident when I told Tornado Boy that he was going to get to go to C-A-M-P last week. He really had a lot of fun trying to guess what word I was spelling, so I made it into a game. I quickly figured out that he could handle just about any three letter word; so I moved on to longer words. I had fun watching him try to identify the word sounds and make the combinations in his head.

Our toughest word was S-T-O-M-P – which Tornado Boy decoded as stamp. I have a feeling that I’ve created a monster and the days of Tornado Dad and I being able to spell things to each other are quickly coming to a close!

Tips for helping your child to be successful with the game:

  • Break longer words up into syllables and help them meld them together.
  • Use this as a chance to reinforce any phonics rules you may be learning. This is a great chance to work with things like silent e.
  • If we’re at home and Tornado Boy is unable to figure out the word in his head; he will use magnetic letters to create the word and then tell us what it is.

The nice thing with this game is that you can truly play it anywhere. It’s a nice diversion if you’re stuck waiting in line at the store or in traffic or the like.

Hi there! I am from the TOS Crew, and I saw your post and came by to take a look at your blog!
I have also done a complete overhaul of my blog in the last few weeks.
I love the content of your blog, and the things you have added.
I really like the calendar archive. I have never seen one of those before.
Man, how did you get to review MUS? That’s awesome!
I really like the name of your blog and the graphics of your header.
The only thing I would saw is that I don’t even notice your background.
Actually the only reason I did notice it, was because I was wondering why you didn’t have a background, and that made me look closer. So, it looks all white with no color.
And don’t take that in a bad way, cause if that’s the way you like it, that’s all that matters.
That’s just from my readers point of view.
I am not sure about google connect. I would think you could have it too, but I don’t know.
Anyhow, I hope this helps, and I will see you around the forums.
Let me know if you get a follow button!

It used to be pink and brown, which was pretty but I wanted it to match the new banner! HA

That is a fun game :) We play spelling in the car, helping my oldest daughter learn her spelling words for school.

It is tricky not being able to spell things to my husband anymore, we now use codes refer to things we don’t want the girls knowing about eg McDonalds is the ‘empire of the evil clown.’ :D

Just everyone be warned, don’t break the word “country” into syllables! :S

We did once and were almost there when we realized just what was about to come out of Dadda’s mouth!

I was driving through roadworks the other day, and Little Miss 4 piped up from the back seat with “S-L-O-W. You need to go slow Mummy because that signs says slow. OK?”

    Umm… ok!!
