Math Monday – Counting on Coins

This weekend while we were out of town, Tornado Dad was working on helping Tornado Boy learn to add coins. He was doing two-column addition on paper and while TB was enjoying the lesson, I felt like it was a bit above his current level. He’s known the value of the individual coins for quite a while, but we really hadn’t done much with money and addition. I found this book to help us out:

We started our lesson by using our Math-U-See blocks to show the value of each coin:

Note: the poor little guy’s had an eye infection and he’s not quite his typical chipper self, but he still wanted to be in the picture.

The Coin Counting Book shows how the different coins relate to one another – i.e. 5 pennies make 1 nickel. We used the coins to mirror the coin equations in the book and “checked” them using the Math-U-See blocks to check the addition. I like the book – it’s very visual and it really reinforces the value of skip counting – especially by fives and tens. The thing that I didn’t like is that it didn’t do any addition of random coins – like 3 dimes plus 1 nickel plus 2 pennies – only the equivalences between coins. We’ll pick that up as the next part of our lesson tomorrow. :)
