What We’re Reading – June 12th

A Couple of Boys Have the Best Week Ever is about two boys, James and Eamon, who go away to day camp and then stay with one of the boy’s grandparents at night. Tornado Boy thought the book was fun and it made him excited about going to camp. I was pretty ambivalent about the book except for the fact that it was in ALL CAPS! I found it terribly annoying.
I Wanna Iguana is one of my favorite new books. Oh yeah, Tornado Boy liked it, too! The book definitely has some advanced vocabulary; but I absolutely loved witty repartee between Alex and his mother as they exchange letters pertaining to his potential pet ownership. If you are considering a pet, this might be a good book to read as it does address the fact that having a pet is a major responsibility. I’ve seen a couple of negative reviews due to the fact that iguanas require rather extreme care; but the book itself is very well written and a tremendous amount of fun.
Cool Shells is one of several library books that we picked up after our trip to the beach. We liked it because it not only talks about types of shell, but also how to start a collection and some of the crafts that you can make with shells. We found out that a lot of our shells that we brought back are scallop shells. If you are strictly looking for how to identify shells, a field guide would probably be a better selection.
Frieda B. Herself – I read a review of Frieda B. at Welcome to Our Wonderland and I had to have it. It sounded like such a fun, whimsical book. It was well worth the purchase. Frieda B. is not available through Amazon. You can only get it through the author’s website for now, but they will ship it for free and Renata Bowers, the author, will even sign it for you if you’d like. The book carries a great message – dream big. The illustrations are delightful. Tornado Boy has read this book several times with me, his Dad and by himself. He really likes that this book tells him that he can dream about anything. You can see a great sample of the book here. It’s so cute! Enjoy!

You can find out what other preschoolers are reading this week over at Mouse Grows, Mouse Learns.
