What We’re Reading – Feb 19

We picked up two batches of books in the library this week and also hit the bargain bin at the bookstore. We have a lot of new books, but we haven’t gotten too far down the pile, mostly because of one of the bargain books. Tornado Boy has been really excited to learn more about monuments since we first met Kiwi and Pear a few weeks ago. He’s still reading that book almost daily, but he’s been asking a lot of questions. We’ve spent some time on Google Earth looking at the some of the different places like the Tah Mahal and the Golden Gate Bridge using their fabulous 360 degree tours. It’s very cool to see what it’s like to be standing in front of something like the Kremlin and really feeling like you’re there. While Tornado Boy loves “flying around” the world to look at different places, I wanted him to be able to have a book of his own that included more detail on some of the places featured in Kiwi and Pear.

Wonders of the World

I found a book called “Wonders of the World”. I appears that it may have been an import book based on its lack of availability here stateside. I’m not sure how it compares to similar books, but we really like it. It has one to two pages on each of 100 natural or man-made wonders. Tornado Boy really enjoys the book. One of his favorite things is that each page has a small world map with a dot where the landmark is located. I love that he is recognizing so many famous places now and that he insists on calling that tower in France the “EE-full” tower.

Our second book is actually a book on video. As part of the BookIt Campaign, the America’s Biggest Bedtime Story was posted yesterday. It was cute, but it was last year’s reading of “I Got Two Dogs” by John Lithgow that Tornado Boy and I both fell in love with. I think that we’ve watched it at least 10 times. We laugh and laugh and laugh. We even sang the song in the car this afternoon. It is well worth trying to catch the video – I think it’s only going to be “live” until February 26th. There’s a video on YouTube of John Lithgow singing it, but it doesn’t have the illustrations from the book.

Lego Rescue Book

Tornado Boy pulled the Lego Rescue book off the shelf after we put the Fire Station together last week. I’d forgotten that we had it. He likes the fact that the same fire station is in the book. I think it’s cute that he uses the names that he gave to his firemen in the set when he reads the book and points out the people. The book has a few good safety tips. If your child likes Lego blocks, they may enjoy these books. They’re made by DK, so the pictures are very good.

If you’d like to see what others are reading with their preschoolers this week, hop on over to Mouse Grows, Mouse Learns.
