A while back we shared the book Who’s Been Here?: A Tale in Tracks by Fran Hodgkins. Tornado Boy really loved this book. Today we got to live the book in our own backyard.
We do not have any pets right now, but we do have a lot of wildlife in our yard. We often see critters in our yard – and even a couple of stray cows last year. I didn’t realize quite how popular our back yard was until today. We have a ton of tracks criss-crossing the property. We had a great time going out to look at them. I’m not quite sure how accurate we are in our identification, but we’re open to other people’s interpretations.
Here’s what we found:
We also had fun looking a pictures of tracks online while we tried to figure out what we had seen. We found a couple of cool resources. A track matching game is available at Montessori for Everyone (look for the animal tracks pdf under the Zoology section). These can be printed on cardstock and laminated if desired. There’s a picture of the finished product on the PreKinders blog. The other matching printout we found was at Exploring Nature site. The child can draw a line from the animal to their track.
I love it when lessons like this present themselves!
